Bed Bug Stains vs Other Marks on Your Mattress

IPest Team Updated Bedbug Treatment

A dark spot on a mattress can mean many things: mould, spilled drinks, sweat, dirt or bed bugs. Distinguishing them matters, because bed bug stains are one of the most useful clues for confirming an infestation.

This guide helps you tell the difference.

The short answer

Bed bug stains are typically small, dark brown or black dots like marker ink spots, often in clusters along mattress seams, piping and tags, which are bed bug droppings, along with occasional small rusty or red smears from crushed bugs or bites. They tend to bleed into fabric when wetted and are found near hiding places. Other marks such as mould are fuzzy or patchy and often green, grey or black, while spills and sweat marks are larger, irregular and often yellowish. Look for other signs, such as shed skins and live bugs, to confirm.

What bed bug marks look like

  • Dark spots (droppings): Tiny black or brown dots, about the size of a pen tip, in clusters.
  • Smears: Brown or rust-coloured streaks where droppings were smeared.
  • Red or rusty blood spots: From crushed bugs or fresh bites.
  • Location: Mattress seams, piping, tags, bed frame joints and headboard.

Other marks and how they differ

  1. Mould and mildew: Fuzzy or powdery patches, usually larger, often green, grey or black, with a damp smell.
  2. Sweat and body oil stains: Yellowish, irregular areas on the sleeping surface.
  3. Spills and food stains: Random shapes and colours, not in seams.
  4. Dirt and dust: Spread out, and brush off easily.
  5. Blood from scratching or cuts: Isolated spots, not clustered in seams.

A simple test

Dab a suspected dark spot with a damp white cloth or cotton bud. Bed bug droppings tend to smear and bleed a rusty or brown colour, because they are digested blood. Dirt usually does not behave in the same way.

Other signs to check

  • Pale, translucent shed skins.
  • Tiny whitish eggs in seams and crevices.
  • Live bugs, reddish-brown and flat.
  • Itchy bites in lines or clusters.

Where to look

  1. Mattress seams, piping and labels.
  2. Box springs and the underside of the mattress.
  3. Bed frame joints and screw holes.
  4. Headboard and nearby furniture.
  5. Walls and skirting near the bed.

What to do if you find them

Photograph the marks, inspect for other signs, and book a professional inspection. Avoid scrubbing the stains away before an inspector has seen them.

When to call a professional

If the marks look like bed bug droppings, or you have unexplained bites, call a pest control provider for confirmation.

Frequently asked questions
