Bed Bug Shed Skins: How to Identify Them
Bed bugs grow by shedding their skin, and the empty skins they leave behind are among the clearest signs of an infestation. Unlike live bugs, which hide, shed skins stay where they were left, so they are often easier to find.
This guide explains what they look like and what to do.
The short answer
Bed bug shed skins, also called exuviae or casings, are pale, translucent, yellowish-brown husks that keep the shape of a bed bug, from a tiny nymph to adult size. They are left in mattress seams, piping, bed frame joints, cracks and furniture. Finding several, especially of different sizes, indicates that bed bugs have been growing and breeding nearby. They do not prove the infestation is active now, so look for live bugs and fresh droppings too, and arrange an inspection.
Why bed bugs shed skins
- Nymphs go through five growth stages.
- Each stage needs a blood meal, after which the nymph sheds its skin.
- Each moult leaves a skin behind, so an infestation accumulates many.
What they look like
- Pale yellow to light brown, thin and translucent.
- Shaped like the bug, with a visible head and legs, but empty.
- Sizes range from tiny, pinhead-sized to adult length.
- Often found in groups.
- Crisp and papery, and may crumble when touched.
Where to look
- Mattress seams, piping, tags and folds.
- Box spring and the underside of the bed.
- Bed frame joints, slats and screw holes.
- Headboard and bedside furniture.
- Sofas, cushions and skirting.
Skins versus other things
- Cockroach shed skins: Larger and in kitchens or bathrooms.
- Carpet beetle larvae casings: Hairy, bristly casings, often in carpets and wardrobes.
- Dust and lint: Do not have the bug shape.
- Dead bugs: Have a darker, solid body.
What skins tell you
- Bed bugs have been present and growing.
- Different sizes suggest ongoing breeding.
- A heavy accumulation suggests a long-standing infestation.
What to do
- Collect one or two skins in a clear container or take clear photos.
- Look for live bugs, dark spots and eggs nearby.
- Vacuum and dispose of the contents outdoors, after the inspector has seen them, if possible.
- Book a professional inspection.
When to call a professional
Shed skins are a strong sign. Even if you have not seen live bugs, an inspection is worthwhile.

Several in one place, especially of different sizes, suggests an established infestation.
Are skins harmful?
Not directly, but they may add to allergens. Clean thoroughly after treatment.
