Why Do You See Cockroaches Only at Night?

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

You switch off the lights, go to bed, and when you walk into the kitchen for a glass of water, cockroaches scatter across the counter. In the morning there is not one to be seen. This pattern is so common that people often assume the problem is minor. It usually is not.

This guide explains why cockroaches are nocturnal and how to use that knowledge to deal with them.

The short answer

Cockroaches are nocturnal. They avoid light, noise and movement, so they spend the day hidden in dark gaps and come out after dark to look for food and water when the home is quiet. Seeing them only at night is normal behaviour and does not mean there are only a few. In fact, for every cockroach you see, many more may be hiding. Daytime sightings are more worrying, as they usually indicate overcrowding or disturbance.

Why they avoid daylight

  • Protection from predators: Darkness gives cover.
  • Moisture: Night air is cooler and more humid, which prevents dehydration.
  • Quiet: Fewer vibrations and less activity in the house.
  • Instinct: They have a strong preference for tight, dark spaces called harbourage.

What they do at night

Cockroaches leave their hiding places to feed on crumbs, grease, pet food, waste and other organic matter, to drink from sinks, drains and leaks, and to mate and explore. They tend to follow the same routes along walls and edges between their harbourage and the kitchen.

What daytime sightings mean

  1. Overcrowding: The hiding spots are full, so some roaches are forced into the open.
  2. Disturbance: Renovation, spraying, cleaning or moving furniture has driven them out.
  3. Hunger or thirst: A food or water shortage may push them out in daylight.
  4. Illness or dying roaches: A sluggish roach in the open may have been exposed to treatment.

How to use night behaviour to your advantage

  • Inspect at night: Switch on the kitchen light about an hour after the house goes quiet. Watch where they run, and follow them back to their harbourage.
  • Place traps in the evening along walls and in corners, and check them in the morning.
  • Remove food and water access at night: Wash dishes, wipe counters, close food containers and dry the sink.
  • Time treatment well: Gel bait placed in their paths is most effective when roaches are foraging.

Preventing night activity

Store food in sealed containers, fix dripping taps and pipes, clean up crumbs and spills each evening, cover floor drains and empty waste bins daily. Avoid leaving pet bowls out overnight.

When to call a professional

If you see more than one or two roaches a night, or any in the daytime, call a professional. Night sightings are the tip of a larger hidden population, and a technician can find and treat the harbourage.

Frequently asked questions

Is seeing one cockroach at night a big deal?

It can be the first sign. A single sighting deserves a quick inspection for droppings and hiding places.

Does leaving a light on keep them away?

It may reduce activity in that spot, but they simply avoid it and keep to dark areas.

Why are they gone by morning?

They return to their hiding places before light arrives.

Are some cockroaches active in the day?

Most common household species are nocturnal. Some outdoor species may be seen in daylight.
