What to Do on the Day of Your Cockroach Treatment

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

The technician arrives, and you wonder what you should have done beforehand. A little preparation makes the treatment more effective and keeps your family safe. Here is a practical checklist.

Your provider's own instructions come first. Use this as a general guide.

The short answer

On treatment day, clear cabinets and surfaces so the technician can reach hiding spots, cover or remove food and utensils, keep children and pets out of the treated areas, and let the technician work uninterrupted. Afterwards, ventilate the home, avoid wiping treated spots for the advised period, and keep food sealed. Preparation takes about 30 to 60 minutes and improves the result.

Before the technician arrives

  1. Empty the kitchen cabinets and drawers, or at least the lower ones, so gel and crevice treatment can reach the corners.
  2. Remove or cover food, utensils, cookware and water vessels. Store them in sealed containers or another room.
  3. Clear the floor under the sink, behind appliances and in the bathroom as far as you can.
  4. Move small items from the area where the technician will work, such as spice racks and appliances on counters.
  5. Arrange for children and pets to be elsewhere during the visit.
  6. Tell the technician about any infants, pregnant women, elderly residents, pets, aquariums or allergies.
  7. Do not clean the kitchen thoroughly just before. Leave the roach paths undisturbed so the technician can see where they are active.

During the visit

  • Let the technician inspect and ask questions about where you have seen roaches.
  • Stay out of the treated room if requested.
  • Check that they treat the kitchen, bathrooms, drains and any other problem areas.
  • Ask what product and method they use.

After treatment

  1. Ventilate the home by opening windows, as the provider advises.
  2. Keep children and pets away from treated areas for the recommended time.
  3. Do not wipe gel spots or treated crevices for the advised period.
  4. Wash utensils and surfaces before using them, if they were exposed.
  5. Keep food sealed and surfaces dry at night.
  6. Take out waste daily.
  7. Note activity over the next two weeks and report any problems.

What is normal afterwards

You may see roaches for a few days after treatment, some moving more slowly or appearing in the open. This is a normal part of the process as they leave their hiding places and die. If activity continues beyond two weeks, ask for a follow-up.

What to avoid

  • Spraying your own insecticide on top of the professional treatment.
  • Mopping or scrubbing treated crevices straight after.
  • Leaving food and dirty dishes out overnight.

When to call a professional

Contact your provider if you see heavy activity after the first two weeks, notice a strong lingering smell, or anyone in the home feels unwell after treatment.
