Termite Swarmers After Rain: What to Do Right Away
You turn on a light after the first heavy rain and dozens of winged insects pour out around it, dropping their wings onto the floor. For many homeowners in Bangalore this is how they first discover termites. Swarmers are a reproductive stage, and they deserve attention.
This guide explains what to do straight away.
The short answer
Termite swarmers are winged reproductive termites that leave a mature colony, typically after rain in warm, humid weather, to find mates and start new colonies. Seeing swarmers indoors, or piles of discarded wings, suggests a colony may be nearby, sometimes inside the structure. Right away, do not panic: vacuum the insects and wings, keep the swarmers' source in mind, photograph or collect a few for identification, avoid spraying and book a professional inspection.
What swarmers look like
- Small, dark brown to black insects about 6 to 10 mm long.
- Two pairs of wings of equal length, translucent and often longer than the body.
- Straight, bead-like antennae and a thick waist.
- They are attracted to light and drop their wings after flying.
Immediate steps
- Turn off lights near doors and windows or turn on lights outdoors, to draw swarmers away.
- Vacuum swarmers and wings and dispose of the bag or contents outdoors.
- Save a few in a sealed container or take photos for identification.
- Note where they came from: a window frame, wall crack, door frame, skirting or floor gap.
- Check for mud tubes, hollow wood and damp.
- Do not spray randomly. It kills a few but can disturb the colony and does not remove it.
- Book an inspection without delay.
What it means
- Swarmers outdoors only: A colony exists nearby, but not necessarily in your home.
- Swarmers indoors: Indicates a colony close to or inside the structure.
- Piles of wings near a window or door: Swarmers entered or emerged there.
Common questions about them
Swarmers do not damage wood themselves and do not bite. Their significance is that they signal a mature colony somewhere close, which can cause damage.
What not to do
- Do not assume it is harmless because they disappear within hours.
- Do not ignore the wings, which are evidence.
- Do not rely on sprays and home remedies.
Prevention
Reduce wood-to-soil contact, fix leaks and damp, keep drainage clear, seal cracks and consider a professional inspection and treatment before the monsoon.
When to call a professional
Call a termite specialist whenever you find swarmers indoors. They can confirm the species, find the colony or entry, and advise on treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Are swarmers the same as flying ants?
No. They look similar but differ in wing, waist and antennae shape. A separate guide covers this.
How long do swarmers last?
A swarm usually lasts a short period, often a few hours, but the colony remains.
Do swarmers mean my house has termites?
Not always, but they indicate a colony nearby. Inspection is needed.
When do they appear?
Often after the first rains, in warm, humid weather.
