Flying Termites vs Flying Ants: How to Tell Them Apart

IPest Team Updated Termite Treatment

Winged insects appear around lights after rain, and the first question is always: are these termites or ants? It matters, because one can signal damage to your woodwork and the other is usually more of a nuisance. The good news is that three simple features separate them.

This guide shows you how to tell them apart.

The short answer

Look at the waist, the antennae and the wings. Flying termites have a thick, straight waist, straight bead-like antennae and two pairs of wings of equal length. Flying ants have a narrow, pinched waist, elbowed antennae and front wings noticeably longer than the back wings. If you see the discarded wings in piles, especially all the same size, that points to termites.

Quick comparison

  1. Waist: Termites have a broad, uniform body with no clear waist. Ants have a clearly narrow, pinched waist.
  2. Antennae: Termite antennae are straight and bead-like. Ant antennae are bent, with an elbow.
  3. Wings: Termite wings are equal in length and often longer than the body. Ant wings are unequal, with the front pair larger.
  4. Colour: Termite swarmers are usually dark brown or black. Flying ants can be black, brown or reddish.
  5. Wing shedding: Termites drop their wings soon after flying, leaving piles. Ants shed less visibly.

Why it matters

  • Termites: Swarmers signal a mature colony nearby that may be damaging wood, and need inspection.
  • Ants: Winged ants indicate a nest nearby, which may be harmless outdoors or a nuisance, though carpenter ants can damage damp wood.

How to check

  1. Catch one in a clear container or on tape.
  2. Use a phone camera zoom to see the waist, antennae and wings.
  3. Look for piles of wings near windows and lights.
  4. Check where they emerged: wall cracks, door frames, wooden items or soil.

What to do

  • If they look like termites, book an inspection promptly.
  • If unsure, take photos and ask a pest professional to identify them.
  • Vacuum the insects and wings.
  • Check for mud tubes, hollow-sounding wood and damp.

When to call a professional

If you are not certain, treat it as a possible termite sign and get it checked. A quick identification avoids both unnecessary worry and missed damage.

Frequently asked questions

Do flying termites bite?

They are not known to bite people in a meaningful way, and they do not damage wood themselves.

Can ants damage wood?

Carpenter ants can excavate damp wood. Most house ants do not.

Do they appear at the same time?

Both may swarm after rain in warm weather.

Is a single winged insect a problem?

One alone is less meaningful. Several, plus wings, call for checking.
