Mosquito Lifecycle: From Egg to Adult in 7 to 10 Days

IPest Team Updated Mosquito Control

Under warm conditions, a mosquito can go from egg to flying adult in about a week to ten days. That short timeline is why a single bucket of forgotten water can produce a crop of biting mosquitoes, and why a weekly check is such a powerful habit.

This guide explains the lifecycle and how to use it against mosquitoes.

The short answer

Mosquitoes have four life stages: egg, larva, pupa and adult. The first three stages live in water. In warm weather, the whole process from egg to adult can take roughly 7 to 10 days, though it varies with species and temperature, taking longer in cooler conditions. Because development depends on standing water, emptying, scrubbing or covering water containers at least once a week interrupts the cycle before adults emerge. Only adult females bite.

The four stages

  1. Egg: Laid on or near water, depending on the species. Aedes eggs stick to container walls and survive drying. Culex lay floating rafts. Anopheles lay single floating eggs. Eggs hatch within a few days when wet.
  2. Larva (wriggler): Lives in the water, feeds on microscopic organisms and moults several times as it grows. This stage often lasts several days.
  3. Pupa (tumbler): A non-feeding stage in which the insect transforms into an adult. It lasts a day or two. Pupae float at the surface and move when disturbed.
  4. Adult: Emerges from the pupal case and rests on the water surface briefly while its wings dry, then flies. Females need blood to produce eggs. Males feed on plant nectar and do not bite.

Timing

  • In warm conditions, the aquatic stages together take about a week or a little more.
  • Cool weather slows development.
  • Adult females can live for weeks and lay eggs several times.

Using the lifecycle against mosquitoes

  1. Weekly checks: Empty, scrub and dry containers at least once a week, before larvae mature.
  2. Cover water storage: Prevent egg-laying with tight lids and mesh.
  3. Remove breeding sites: Discard containers and fix leaks.
  4. Treat water you cannot empty: With professional larvicide or larvae-eating fish, where suitable.
  5. Target adults as a supplement: Screens, nets and repellents protect people, and fogging provides temporary relief.

Why larvae and pupae are the best targets

They are concentrated in water, cannot fly away and cannot bite. Controlling them prevents adult mosquitoes from ever emerging.

Disease links

Different species carry different diseases, including dengue, chikungunya and malaria. Reducing breeding reduces risk. See a doctor if you develop fever or other symptoms.

When to call a professional

For large or complex breeding sites, a professional can survey and treat them, and set up a schedule that matches the lifecycle.

Frequently asked questions

How long do adult mosquitoes live?

Often a few weeks, depending on species and conditions.

Do mosquitoes need a lot of water?

No. A bottle cap's worth can be enough.

Why weekly?

Because the aquatic stages take about a week to complete.

Do males bite?

No.
