Mosquito Control Before Weddings and Outdoor Events
Few things spoil an outdoor wedding or event like a swarm of mosquitoes at dusk. Gardens, lawns, banquet grounds and open venues in Bangalore can be mosquito-prone, especially in the evening and during the rains. Planning ahead gives much better results than a last-minute spray.
This guide is for hosts, venue managers and event planners.
The short answer
For mosquito control before an outdoor event, start a week or two ahead by removing standing water and clearing breeding sites around the venue, then schedule professional treatment shortly before the event: larvicide for water that cannot be removed, barrier spraying on foliage and resting sites, and, if appropriate, fogging timed close to the event with precautions for food, guests, pets and decorations. Add comfort measures such as fans, screens in enclosed areas, good lighting choices and repellents for guests. Always follow safety and re-entry advice, and avoid treatment near food service.
Plan ahead
- Visit the venue early and look for standing water, drains, tanks, ponds, dense vegetation and waste areas.
- Agree who is responsible: the venue, the host or a contractor.
- Book a pest control provider early, particularly in peak seasons.
One to two weeks before
- Remove or drain standing water, and empty containers, buckets, plant saucers and decorations that hold water.
- Clear blocked drains and gutters.
- Cover water tanks and fix leaks.
- Trim dense vegetation and clear debris.
- Treat ornamental ponds and water features appropriately.
A few days before
- Professional larvicide treatment for water that cannot be removed.
- Barrier spraying of foliage, hedges, shaded areas and perimeters, which lasts longer than fogging.
Close to the event
- If fogging is used, schedule it in the hours before the event, early enough that the area is ventilated and dry before guests and food arrive, as advised by the provider.
- Cover or remove food, drinks and decor during treatment.
- Keep children, pets and guests away until safe.
Guest comfort
- Use fans around seating and dining areas, since moving air deters mosquitoes.
- Use screened or enclosed areas where practical.
- Choose lighting that does not attract insects to seating, placing lights away from guests.
- Provide safe repellents for guests, with age guidance on labels.
- Avoid burning coils near guests and food.
Safety considerations
- Do not spray near food, serving areas or guests.
- Take care around ponds, fish and edible plants.
- Choose registered products and trained applicators.
- Follow re-entry times.
After the event
Clean up waste and remove containers, so that the venue does not become a breeding site afterwards.
When to call a professional
