Hosting an Evening Party Outdoors: Mosquito Control Checklist
An evening party on the terrace, lawn or balcony is lovely, until the mosquitoes arrive at dusk. A bit of preparation over the week before, and some smart choices on the day, can keep your guests comfortable.
This checklist is for home hosts. For larger weddings and events, see our guide for events.
The short answer
To keep an outdoor evening party mosquito-free, remove standing water around the space in the days before, treat or cover water that cannot be removed, trim vegetation and clear drains, consider professional barrier treatment a day or two ahead, set up fans to blow across seating, keep food covered, avoid dense plants and shade near guests, provide suitable repellents and consider a screened or enclosed area for children and older guests. Avoid coils and aerosols near food and people, and follow safety precautions with any treatment.
One week before
- Walk the space and look for standing water: plant saucers, buckets, decorative bowls, blocked drains and puddles.
- Empty, scrub and dry containers. Remove or cover anything that holds water.
- Clear drains and gutters, and cover tanks.
- Trim dense shrubs and overgrown plants near the seating area.
One to two days before
- Consider professional barrier spraying on foliage and resting sites around the area, which lasts longer than fogging.
- Treat water features and unavoidable water with larvicide, through a professional.
- If fogging is used, time it so that it is complete, dry and ventilated well before guests and food arrive.
On the day
- Fans: Place fans so that they blow across seating areas. Mosquitoes are weak fliers in moving air.
- Layout: Seat guests in open, breezy spots, away from dense plants, damp corners and standing water.
- Lighting: Keep bright lights away from seating, so that insects gather elsewhere.
- Food and drinks: Keep covered, and avoid leaving water containers around.
- Repellents: Provide guest-friendly repellents, with age guidance, and encourage light, loose clothing.
- Screened area: Offer an enclosed or screened space for children, older guests and those who are sensitive.
What to avoid
- Burning coils or using aerosol sprays near food and people.
- Last-minute spraying near the buffet.
- Relying on citronella candles alone.
Safety notes
- Keep treatment away from guests, children and pets until dry.
- Tell your provider about ponds, fish, birds and edible plants.
- Follow re-entry advice.
After the party
Empty and clear any containers, ice tubs and decor that collected water, so that your garden is not left as a breeding site.
When to call a professional
If your garden is mosquito-prone, book a professional well in advance and ask for a plan for the date.
