How to Inspect Your Home for Rat Entry Points: Step-by-Step

IPest Team Updated Rodent Control

Trapping rats without finding how they got in is like mopping while the tap is running. A careful inspection of your home, inside and out, helps you find the gaps and weak points so you can close them. It takes a couple of hours and a torch.

This guide gives a step-by-step approach.

The short answer

To inspect for rat entry points, work systematically from outside to inside and from ground level to the roof, looking for holes and gaps larger than about a centimetre, particularly around pipes, cables, vents, AC holes, doors, windows, drains, roof edges and the foundation, plus signs of use such as grease marks, droppings, gnawing and burrows. Mark and photograph each point, then seal them with durable materials. Rats can use surprisingly small gaps, so look carefully, and check again after sealing.

What you need

  • A bright torch and a small mirror, if available.
  • Gloves and a mask.
  • A notebook or phone to record findings.
  • Chalk or tape to mark gaps.
  • A ladder, used safely, for roof edges and eaves.

Step 1: Outside at ground level

  1. Walk around the foundation and plinth, looking for cracks, holes and burrows.
  2. Check gaps around pipes, cables, meter boxes and drains where they enter the building.
  3. Look at vents, air bricks and grilles.
  4. Check gaps under doors and gates.
  5. Look for runways, droppings and greasy marks along walls.

Step 2: Outside higher up

  • Check roof edges, eaves, tiles and gaps where the roof meets the walls.
  • Look at pipes, cables and AC lines running to the roof or upper floors.
  • Check branches and structures that touch the building.
  • Look at balcony and terrace doors, and gaps around windows.

Step 3: Inside, starting with the kitchen

  1. Look under the sink at pipe cut-outs.
  2. Check behind appliances and cabinets for gaps and signs.
  3. Check the gas pipe and chimney or exhaust openings.
  4. Look at floor drains.

Step 4: Other rooms

  • Bathrooms: pipe gaps behind toilets and under basins.
  • Bedrooms and living areas: AC pipe holes, cable gaps and skirting.
  • Storerooms and cupboards: corners, shelving and behind boxes.
  • Utility areas and staircases.

Step 5: Roof space and ceilings

  • Look for droppings, nests, gnawed wires and daylight through gaps, with safe access.
  • Check where pipes and cables pass through ceilings.

What to look for

  1. Holes and gaps, especially around services.
  2. Gnaw marks on wood, plastic and edges.
  3. Greasy rub marks around openings.
  4. Droppings, nests and tracks.
  5. Draughts or light coming through gaps.

Record and seal

Mark each point, photograph it and list the material needed. Seal with metal mesh or steel wool plus cement or sealant, after the rats have been removed.

Re-check

Repeat the inspection after sealing, and again after the monsoon. Rats can create new openings.

When to call a professional

A professional can spot entry points you may miss and use specialist tools. This is worth it for large or older properties.

Frequently asked questions

How small a gap matters?

Very small. See our guide on gap sizes.

Do I seal before or after removing rats?

Remove rats first, so none are trapped inside.

How often should I inspect?

Annually, and after any sign of rats.

Can I use foam?

Not alone. Rats can gnaw through it. Use metal and cement.
