How Small a Gap Can a Rat or Mouse Squeeze Through?
Most people are shocked by how small a hole a rat or mouse can use. If you believe a gap is too small, you may leave it open and wonder why rodents keep appearing. Knowing the real sizes helps you decide what to seal.
This guide gives rule-of-thumb sizes. Exact dimensions vary with the size and age of the animal.
The short answer
As a rule of thumb, a mouse can squeeze through a gap of about 6 mm, roughly the width of a pencil, and a rat through a gap of about 12 mm or somewhat more, roughly the size of a thumb or a one-rupee coin turned on its side, because they can compress their flexible rib cages and bodies, and they can gnaw edges to widen openings. Young animals can fit through even smaller gaps. The practical rule: if you can poke a pencil through, a mouse can follow, and any gap larger than about a centimetre should be sealed.
Approximate sizes
- Mice: About 6 mm.
- Young rats: Around 10 mm.
- Adult rats: About 12 to 20 mm, depending on the size of the animal.
These are rough guides. Do not treat any gap as safe just because it seems too small.
Why they can fit
- Flexible bodies: Their ribs and bones are flexible and let them compress.
- Whisker guidance: They judge gaps by their skull and whiskers. If the head fits, the body generally follows.
- Gnawing: They can enlarge a gap by chewing soft materials.
- Persistence: They will try repeatedly.
Common gaps people overlook
- Around pipes, drains and cables passing through walls and floors.
- Under doors and around door frames.
- AC pipe holes and exhaust fan openings.
- Gaps between cabinets and walls.
- Roof edges, eaves and vent openings.
- Cracks in the foundation and plinth.
- Broken air bricks and ventilation grilles.
How to seal them properly
- Use materials that rats cannot gnaw through: cement mortar, metal mesh with small openings, sheet metal and steel wool pushed in firmly.
- Hold steel wool in place with sealant or cement, so it cannot be pulled out.
- Do not rely on foam, rubber, plastic or wood alone.
- Do not block ventilation where it is needed. Use mesh.
- Check seals regularly for gnaw marks.
Measuring
If a pencil fits through the gap, a mouse can follow. If your thumb fits, a rat can get through. When in doubt, seal.
Remove rats first
Do not seal rats inside. Remove them first, or leave a one-way exit.
When to call a professional
A professional can find and seal gaps you may miss and suggest the right materials.
