Ants Inside Kitchen Cabinets and Drawers

IPest Team Updated Ant Control

Opening a cabinet to find a stream of ants on the shelves, around the sugar jar or in the cutlery drawer is a frustrating discovery. Cabinets are dark, undisturbed and close to food, and ants may be using them as a storehouse, a trail or even a nest.

This guide explains why and how to clear them safely.

The short answer

Ants enter kitchen cabinets and drawers to reach food stored there, to follow trails between a nest and a food source, to find moisture near the sink or leaks, or to nest in hidden gaps, back panels and insulation. To clear them, empty and clean the cabinet, discard contaminated food, find where ants enter and the direction of the trail, place bait outside the food storage area on the trail, seal gaps and fix leaks, and avoid spraying pesticides inside cabinets where food and utensils are stored. Keep food in sealed containers afterwards.

Why ants go into cabinets

  • Sweets, grains, snacks, spices and open packets inside.
  • Crumbs and sticky spills on shelves.
  • Moisture under the sink and from leaks.
  • Gaps in back panels and joints connecting to wall cracks.
  • Warmth near the stove or fridge.

Step 1: Empty and inspect

  1. Remove everything from the affected cabinet and drawers.
  2. Check food for ants and contamination. Discard open or heavily infested items.
  3. Inspect the shelves, corners, hinges and back panel with a torch.
  4. Note where ants are coming in and which way they go.

Step 2: Clean

  • Vacuum crumbs and dead ants.
  • Wipe the cabinet with warm soapy water, to remove scent trails and sticky residue.
  • Dry thoroughly.
  • Wash containers and jars with sticky exteriors.

Step 3: Treat safely

  • Do not spray or dust inside the cabinet: Food, utensils and surfaces can be contaminated.
  • Use bait outside the cabinet: Place ant gel bait along the trail outside, behind or beneath, in cracks, away from food and out of reach of children and pets.
  • Be patient: Let the bait work, and do not wipe the trail until activity has stopped.

Step 4: Seal and fix

  • Seal gaps in back panels, joints and wall cracks, after the ants are gone.
  • Repair leaks under the sink.
  • Keep the area dry.

Step 5: Restock sensibly

  1. Store sugar, sweets, grains and snacks in airtight containers.
  2. Do not store open packets.
  3. Wipe jar rims and shelves regularly.
  4. Do not leave spills.

If the nest is in the cabinet

Ants can nest behind back panels and in insulation. If trails persist after baiting, ask a professional to inspect behind fixed units.

What not to do

  • Do not use chalk, powders or sprays in food cabinets.
  • Do not put bait next to open food.

When to call a professional

If ants return to the cabinets after cleaning and baiting, call a professional to find the nest.

Usually not. A professional may treat behind it.

Are cabinet liners useful?

They help cleaning but do not stop ants.
