How to Ant-Proof Sugar, Jaggery and Sweets

IPest Team Updated Ant Control

Sugar, jaggery, honey and Indian sweets are ant magnets, and anyone who has found a sugar jar swarming with ants knows how fast it happens. The good news is that ants cannot get into a properly sealed container, and a few habits keep your sweets safe.

This guide gives practical tips.

The short answer

To ant-proof sugar, jaggery and sweets, store them in airtight containers made of glass, metal or thick, tight-lidded plastic, wipe the outside and the rim of containers so that no sticky residue remains, keep them off the floor and away from walls, place container legs or shelves in water or smooth barriers if ants are persistent, use clean dry spoons, refrigerate sweets that suit it, and deal with the ant trail and source separately. If ants get into food, discard it if it is heavily contaminated, and follow food-safety judgement.

Why they are targeted

  • Ants love sugar, syrups, jaggery and honey, and can smell them from a distance.
  • Sticky residues on jars and spoons act as scent beacons.
  • Poorly sealed containers and paper or cloth packaging give easy access.

Containers that work

  1. Airtight glass or metal jars and tins: With tight, well-fitting lids and gaskets.
  2. Thick, hard plastic containers with locking lids.
  3. Avoid: Loose-lidded containers, paper, cloth and thin plastic bags.

Handling and cleaning

  • Wipe spills on and around containers immediately.
  • Clean the outside and the rim of jars, where sticky residue collects.
  • Use a clean, dry spoon every time. Wet or sticky spoons carry residue and moisture.
  • Wipe shelves and counters where sweets are stored.

Placement

  • Store on a shelf away from walls, windows and the floor, where ants travel.
  • Keep containers off the ground and away from the sink.
  • If ants are persistent, place containers on a stand with legs in small dishes of water, or on a tray with a moat barrier, or use a smooth barrier such as petroleum jelly on legs, if suitable. Keep them away from where children reach.

Sweets and mithai

  • Store in airtight tins or boxes, and refrigerate those that suit it.
  • Do not leave sweets on open plates or covered only by a cloth.
  • Keep festival sweets and gift boxes closed and off the floor.
  • Remove packaging that has syrup or sticky residue.

Honey, jam and syrups

Wipe jar rims and lids, and store upright in a cupboard. Clean drips straight away.

If ants get in

  1. Move the container away. If it is contaminated with many ants, throw out the contents. If only a few ants are present and the food is sealed, you may remove them and judge carefully.
  2. Wash the container before reuse.
  3. Find the trail, clean it and use bait if needed.

Break the trail

Once ants have found a food source, they leave a scent trail. After baiting, wipe the area with soapy water to remove the scent.

When to call a professional

If ants keep finding your sweets despite good storage, there may be a nest nearby. A professional can find it.
