When to See a Doctor After Mosquito Bites: Warning Signs

IPest Team Updated Mosquito Control

Most mosquito bites are just itchy nuisances. But because mosquitoes in India can spread illnesses such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria, and because bites can sometimes become infected or trigger strong allergic reactions, it helps to know which signs mean it is time to see a doctor.

This guide is general information, not medical advice. If you are worried, do not wait: see a doctor.

The short answer

See a doctor if, within days to a couple of weeks after mosquito exposure, you develop fever, chills, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, joint or muscle pain, rash, nausea or vomiting, unusual tiredness, bleeding or easy bruising, or severe abdominal pain, since these can signal mosquito-borne illnesses. Also see a doctor for bites that become infected with spreading redness, warmth, pus or increasing pain, or for large, painful swelling. Seek emergency care for breathing difficulty, swelling of the face, lips or tongue, fainting, confusion, severe weakness or persistent vomiting.

Signs of possible mosquito-borne illness

  • Fever, especially sudden or high, or fever with chills and sweating.
  • Severe headache or pain behind the eyes.
  • Severe joint or muscle pain.
  • Skin rash.
  • Nausea, vomiting and loss of appetite.
  • Extreme fatigue.

Mosquito-borne diseases such as dengue, chikungunya and malaria can look alike in the early days, so testing and medical advice matter. Do not self-medicate, as some medicines are unsafe in certain fevers.

Warning signs that need urgent attention

  1. Persistent vomiting or inability to keep fluids down.
  2. Severe abdominal pain.
  3. Bleeding from the gums or nose, blood in vomit or stool, or easy bruising.
  4. Drowsiness, confusion, irritability or extreme restlessness.
  5. Cold, clammy skin or very rapid breathing.
  6. Seizures.
  7. Yellowing of the skin or eyes.

Signs of skin infection

  • Spreading redness, warmth or swelling.
  • Pus or crusting.
  • Increasing pain.
  • Red streaks or swollen glands.
  • Fever.

Signs of severe allergic reaction

Swelling of the face, lips or tongue, wheezing, difficulty breathing, dizziness, fainting or widespread hives require emergency care.

Higher-risk groups

Seek medical advice earlier for infants and young children, pregnant women, older adults and people with other health conditions.

Tell the doctor

  • When symptoms started and how they have changed.
  • Where you have been, including recent travel.
  • Whether there are mosquito problems or known cases in your area.
  • Medicines you have taken.

Prevention

  • Remove breeding sites weekly.
  • Use screens, nets and repellents.
  • Protect people who are ill from further bites.

When to call a professional

For breeding sites at home or in your compound, a pest control professional can survey and treat. For health concerns, always see a doctor.
