Ultrasonic Rat Repellers: Do They Work?

IPest Team Updated Rodent Control

Plug-in ultrasonic repellers are sold as a quiet, chemical-free way to drive rats and mice out of the home. You plug one in, and supposedly the high-pitched sound, inaudible to people, makes rodents leave. The idea is attractive, but the results are disappointing for most users.

This guide explains what is known.

The short answer

There is little reliable evidence that ultrasonic repellers control rats. Studies have generally found that any effect is short-lived, because rodents get used to the sound, and that ultrasound does not travel well around furniture, through walls or into hiding places, where rats actually live. Rats will tolerate irritation when food and shelter are available. They are not a substitute for sealing entry points, removing food and using traps or professional control, and they may disturb some pets.

What manufacturers claim

  • Ultrasound is unpleasant to rodents and drives them away.
  • It covers a room or the whole house.
  • It is safe and chemical-free.

Why they fall short

  1. Habituation: Rodents often get used to the sound.
  2. Limited reach: Ultrasound is easily blocked by furniture, walls and soft materials, leaving shadows where rats can move freely.
  3. Existing nests: Rats already settled are unlikely to leave.
  4. Stronger motivation: Food and shelter outweigh discomfort.
  5. Weak evidence: Independent testing rarely shows lasting control.

Pet and household concerns

  • Dogs, cats and small animals such as hamsters and rabbits may hear and be disturbed by ultrasonic sound.
  • They are generally considered safe for people, but may annoy some.

What works better

  • Seal gaps and holes with steel wool or mesh and sealant.
  • Store food securely and manage waste.
  • Remove clutter and fix leaks.
  • Use snap traps or professional control.
  • Maintain regular inspections.

Should you buy one?

If you already own one, it is unlikely to cause harm to people, but do not rely on it. The money is better spent on proofing and professional help.

When to call a professional

If you are still seeing signs of rats despite a repeller, the infestation is established. A professional can find the cause and treat it.

Frequently asked questions

Can ultrasonic devices work in a closed room?

Not reliably, since rats hide in places the sound does not reach.

Are they safe for pets?

Some pets may be disturbed. Watch their behaviour.

Do electromagnetic devices work better?

There is little evidence for these either.

What is the most reliable approach?

Proofing, sanitation and trapping or professional control.
