Termite Workers, Soldiers and Swarmers: Who Does What
When you find termites in your home, you may see different kinds: small pale ones, ones with larger heads, and ones with wings. These are different castes, each with a job. Knowing them helps you understand what you are looking at.
This guide explains the main castes and what each indicates.
The short answer
A termite colony has workers, which forage, feed the colony and build tunnels and are the ones that damage wood; soldiers, which defend the colony and have enlarged heads and jaws; and reproductives, including the king and queen and the winged swarmers that leave to start new colonies. Workers are the most numerous and the least visible. Seeing swarmers means a mature colony nearby, while seeing workers and soldiers in a broken mud tube means active feeding.
Workers
- Appearance: Small, pale, soft-bodied, wingless.
- Job: Find food, feed other castes, build and repair tunnels and nests.
- Importance: They cause the damage to wood and other cellulose.
- When you see them: When mud tubes or infested wood are broken open.
Soldiers
- Appearance: Similar to workers but with a larger, darker head and strong jaws.
- Job: Defend the colony against ants and other threats.
- Importance: Their presence confirms a colony. They are usually fewer than workers.
- When you see them: Near breaks in tunnels, protecting the opening.
Reproductives
- Queen and king: Live deep in the nest. The queen lays eggs, sometimes in huge numbers over her life.
- Swarmers (alates): Winged adults that leave the colony to mate and start new ones, usually after rain.
- When you see them: Swarmers around lights and discarded wings on sills.
Comparison
- Workers: Most numerous, pale, feeding and building.
- Soldiers: Larger heads, defending.
- Swarmers: Winged, dark, reproducing and dispersing.
What it means for you
- Workers or soldiers in wood or tubes: active infestation.
- Swarmers indoors: a mature colony nearby, possibly in the structure.
- Only wings found: swarmers emerged recently.
What to do
Photograph what you see, avoid disturbing the colony more than needed and book a professional inspection. Treatment focuses on cutting off the colony's access and addressing the source.
When to call a professional
Whenever you find any caste inside your home. A specialist can identify the species and plan treatment.
