Termite Damage vs Wood Borer Damage: Spot the Difference
Both termites and wood borers eat wood from the inside, and both can leave furniture and frames hollow. They are different insects, and the right treatment depends on knowing which one you have. Fortunately the signs they leave are quite different.
This guide explains how to tell them apart.
The short answer
Wood borers, which are beetle larvae, typically leave small, round exit holes and fine, powdery dust called frass that falls from the wood, in a pattern of tunnels packed with powder. Termites typically leave mud tubes, irregular galleries lined with soil, hollow wood with a thin surface layer and no fine powder pile, often with wings nearby after swarming. If you see round pinholes with powder, suspect borers. If you see mud tubes and soil-filled galleries, suspect termites.
Wood borer signs
- Small round holes: Usually pinhead size, often a millimetre or two across.
- Fine powder (frass): Flour-like dust under the wood, often with fresh deposits.
- Tunnels packed with frass: Seen if the wood is broken open.
- Often in seasoned hardwood and furniture, including beds, tables and doors.
- Emergence of small beetles, in some seasons.
Termite signs
- Mud tubes on walls and wood.
- Galleries with soil or mud, irregular and following the grain.
- A thin outer layer with hollow wood inside.
- Few visible holes, sometimes sealed with mud.
- Wings after swarms.
- Damp-associated damage, with soil contact or moisture.
Side-by-side comparison
- Holes: Borers leave clean round holes. Termites leave few, irregular holes.
- Debris: Borers leave fine powder. Termites leave mud and soil-like material.
- Tunnels: Borer tunnels are round and packed with frass. Termite galleries are irregular and soil-lined.
- Tubes: Mud tubes point to termites.
- Location: Borers often attack furniture and seasoned wood. Termites often connect to soil, walls and moisture.
Why it matters
Treatment differs. Termites need soil, wall and structural treatment, and borers need wood-focused treatment. Using the wrong approach wastes money and lets damage continue. Some homes have both.
What to do
- Photograph holes, powder and tubes.
- Collect a little powder in a clean container.
- Avoid moving infested furniture around the house.
- Book a professional inspection.
When to call a professional
If you cannot tell which it is, or you see signs of both, a specialist can identify the pest and recommend treatment.
Frequently asked questions
Is powder always borers?
Usually, though other pests produce frass too. Look at the holes and tubes as well.
Can termites and borers be in the same furniture?
Yes, though uncommon. A specialist can check.
Do borers need soil contact?
No. They live in the wood itself.
Which is more serious?
Both can cause serious damage. Termites often spread faster through a building.
