Rat Runways and Grease Marks: Reading the Signs

IPest Team Updated Rodent Control

Rats are creatures of habit. They follow the same routes along walls, pipes and edges between their nest and food, and over time they leave marks: greasy smears, worn paths, tracks and gnawed edges. If you learn to read these signs, you can find where rats are going and place control measures where they will work.

This guide explains what to look for.

The short answer

Rats prefer to travel along walls and edges, using touch from their whiskers to guide them, and the oils and dirt in their fur leave dark, greasy smudges along these paths, called rub marks. Other signs include worn runways in grass and dust, footprints and tail drag marks, droppings, urine trails and gnawed holes. These tell you where rats travel and where to place traps, seal entry points and focus cleaning. Fresh, glossy marks suggest current activity, while dry, dusty ones suggest older use.

Types of signs

  • Rub marks: Dark, greasy smears on walls, skirting, pipes and around holes.
  • Runways: Worn paths in grass, soil or dust along walls and fences.
  • Footprints and tail marks: Visible in dust or soft surfaces, with tail drag lines.
  • Droppings: Dark pellets along runways and near food.
  • Urine trails: Stains and smell, sometimes visible under UV light.
  • Gnaw marks: On packaging, wood, pipes and wires.

Where to look

  1. Along skirting boards and walls, especially behind furniture.
  2. Around holes, pipes and gaps.
  3. On beams, ledges and pipes in roof spaces.
  4. Along fences, walls and paths outdoors.
  5. Near food and waste areas.

How to tell if it is recent

  • Fresh grease marks look dark and slightly soft or glossy.
  • Old marks are dry, dusty and brittle.
  • Fresh droppings are dark and moist. Old ones are dry and crumbly.
  • Clean a small area and check whether marks return.

How to use the signs

  1. Place traps along runways, against walls, with the trigger end near the wall.
  2. Find entry points by following marks to holes and gaps.
  3. Seal the gaps after the rats are gone.
  4. Monitor with a light dusting of flour or a monitoring tray to see fresh tracks, away from food areas.

Safety

  • Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning marks and droppings.
  • Do not dry-sweep. Damp-wipe and disinfect.
  • Keep traps and baits away from children and pets.

When to call a professional

A professional is trained to read signs and place control where it works. If you find marks and cannot trace them, call for an inspection.

Frequently asked questions

Why do rats follow walls?

They feel safer along edges and use their whiskers to navigate.

Can I use powder to track them?

A thin flour layer in a safe, non-food area can show footprints.

Do grease marks mean a large infestation?

They show regular use, which suggests established activity.

Do mice leave marks too?

Yes, but smaller and fainter.
