Rat-Damaged Wires: A Homeowner's Inspection Checklist
If rats have been active in your home, it is sensible to check for damage to wiring. A visual inspection will not find everything, but it can reveal gnawed cables, nests and warning signs, and tell you when to call an electrician.
This checklist is for visual checks only. Do not touch exposed wires or open electrical panels. Electrical repairs must be done by a licensed electrician.
The short answer
To check for rat-damaged wiring, switch off power where it is safe to do so before looking closely at accessible cables, inspect roof spaces, behind appliances, around AC pipes and in storerooms for gnawed insulation, exposed copper, nests and droppings, check switchboards and sockets for scorch marks or burning smell, and note symptoms such as flickering lights and tripping. Never touch exposed wires. If you find any damage or warning signs, leave it alone, switch off the circuit and call a licensed electrician.
Before you start
- Use a torch rather than a naked flame.
- Do not touch exposed wires or open panels or sockets.
- Wear gloves and a mask for dusty or contaminated areas.
- Be careful in roof spaces and on ladders. Ask for help.
The checklist
- Roof space or false ceiling: Look for nests, droppings and gnawed cables along beams and wires.
- Behind appliances: Check refrigerators, washing machines, TVs and other appliances for cable damage, droppings and nests.
- Kitchen and utility areas: Look around the stove, chimney and sink for gnawed cables and pipe sleeves.
- AC units and pipes: Check wiring on indoor and outdoor units, pipe insulation and holes in walls.
- Switchboards and meter boxes: From outside, look for droppings, nests, scorch marks or a burning smell.
- Extension cords and power strips: Check for chewed insulation and replace damaged ones.
- Garage and storeroom: Look for gnawed cables on tools, lights and stored equipment.
- Vehicles: See our guide on rats in cars.
Warning signs of damage
- Flickering or dimming lights.
- Frequent tripping of breakers.
- Burning or hot plastic smell.
- Buzzing or crackling sounds.
- Appliances that stop working without explanation.
- Warm or discoloured sockets and switches.
What to do if you find damage
- Do not touch exposed or damaged wires.
- Switch off the affected circuit or main supply if it is safe.
- Keep children and pets away.
- Call a licensed electrician to inspect and repair.
- Arrange rat control and proofing so it does not recur.
If you smell burning or see smoke
Evacuate and call emergency services. Do not try to deal with it yourself.
Limits of a visual check
Wires inside walls and conduits cannot be seen. If rats have been in the walls or roof for some time, ask an electrician for a proper inspection and testing.
Prevention
- Control rats and seal entry points.
- Keep roof spaces and storerooms tidy.
- Use protective conduit where advised.
- Repeat the checklist after any rodent problem.
When to call a professional
Call a pest controller for the rats and an electrician for the wiring.
