How to Find the Source of a Cockroach Infestation in Your Home

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

Seeing a cockroach is the end of the story, not the start. For every roach in the open, many more are hiding in places you rarely look. Finding the source is the difference between a short-term fix and a lasting solution.

This guide shows how to read the signs, where to search, and how to confirm the main hiding place.

The short answer

To find the source of a cockroach infestation, search at night with a flashlight, look for droppings, egg cases and smear marks near water and food, and place sticky monitoring traps along walls to see where the roaches travel. Most infestations centre on the kitchen, bathroom or a utility area, usually in a warm, damp, dark gap close to food. The spot with the most droppings, the densest trap catches and the smell is likely the source.

Signs that point to the source

  • Droppings: Small dark specks like pepper or coffee grounds from small species, and larger cylindrical droppings from big species.
  • Egg cases (oothecae): Small brown capsules, often tucked into cracks and corners.
  • Smear marks: Irregular brown stains in damp areas.
  • Shed skins: Pale, papery skins left by growing nymphs.
  • A musty oily smell: Stronger near the main hiding place.
  • Dead cockroaches: Often found near the entrance to a hiding spot.

Where to search

  1. Under and behind the kitchen sink: Check the pipe cut-outs and the back wall of the cabinet.
  2. Behind the refrigerator and other appliances: The motor area is warm and often dusty.
  3. Around the stove, chimney and hob: Grease and heat attract them.
  4. Cabinet hinges, shelf joints and drawer tracks: Roaches like tight, dark gaps.
  5. Bathroom drains and the area behind the toilet.
  6. Washing machine, water purifier and dishwasher.
  7. Electrical switchboards and the area around the meter.
  8. Cardboard boxes, newspaper stacks and storage areas.

The night inspection

Cockroaches are most active after dark. About an hour after the house goes quiet, switch on the kitchen light and watch where they run. Note the direction they take, because most head straight back to their harbourage. A flashlight pointed into a cabinet or behind an appliance often reveals movement.

Using sticky traps to map movement

Place sticky monitoring traps flat against walls and in corners of the kitchen, bathroom and utility area for two to three nights. Mark each location. The trap with the most catch is closest to the main hiding place. Traps also help you judge size: mostly small nymphs suggest active breeding nearby, while large adults suggest roaches arriving from drains or neighbours.

Check for outside entry

If the source is not inside your flat, look at shared drains, pipe shafts, the garbage chute area and neighbouring units. Roaches that appear mostly near the drain or the wall shared with a neighbour are probably coming in from outside.

When to call a professional

If you cannot find the source, or traps show roaches in several rooms, a technician can inspect inside wall voids and behind fixed fittings that you cannot reach. They can also tell whether the infestation is local or building-wide.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I only see cockroaches at night?

They avoid light and stay hidden during the day. Seeing them in daylight often means the hiding places are overcrowded.

How many roaches means a serious problem?

Seeing even one regularly deserves action. Several roaches at once, or any in daylight, usually indicates an established colony.

Can I find egg cases easily?

They are small and often hidden in cracks, but a flashlight and patience will usually find a few near the main source.

Is the source always in the kitchen?

Most often, yes, but bathrooms, utility areas and shared drains can also be the origin.
