How to Cockroach-Proof a Modular Kitchen During Installation

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

A new modular kitchen looks spotless, but behind the panels it is full of voids: gaps between the cabinets and the wall, around pipes, behind the back panel and under the base units. Once the cabinets are fixed, those spaces are hard to reach, and cockroaches love them.

This guide shows how to build in protection during installation, when it is easiest and cheapest.

The short answer

To cockroach-proof a modular kitchen during installation, seal gaps around pipes and between cabinets and walls before and during fitting, use closed or sealed back panels and joints, fill voids under the base units and plinth, make sure the sink area is waterproof and the plumbing is leak-free, and keep construction waste and cartons out of the kitchen. Ask the installer to agree on these points in advance, and inspect before the final panels are closed. A little work at this stage prevents years of problems.

Before installation

  1. Inspect the empty kitchen for cracks, pipe cut-outs and drain gaps.
  2. Treat the area with a pest control service while it is empty and open, if there are signs of roaches.
  3. Seal wall cracks and pipe gaps with cement or a suitable sealant.
  4. Fix plumbing leaks and test the sink drain.
  5. Remove debris and any cardboard from the room.

During installation

  • Seal the cabinet-to-wall gap with a flexible sealant or a closed profile.
  • Close the pipe cut-outs in the sink cabinet, using collars or sealant around pipes.
  • Fill the plinth and base voids or use sealed, closed plinth sections.
  • Seal the joints between panels, countertops and backsplash.
  • Use moisture-resistant material in the sink cabinet.
  • Keep hinge and handle holes tidy, and avoid leaving open routing channels.
  • Ask the installers not to eat in the kitchen or leave waste.

Layout and design choices

  • Leave a small, accessible gap behind the refrigerator and stove for cleaning, but seal the openings into walls.
  • Choose a sink cabinet with a removable back panel for inspection.
  • Keep the chimney and hob area easy to wipe.
  • Avoid hidden void spaces that cannot be inspected.

Before handover

  1. Check under the sink and behind cabinets for open gaps.
  2. Run water and check for leaks.
  3. Seal visible gaps around the countertop and wall.
  4. Remove packaging and debris.
  5. Schedule a pest treatment before you start using the kitchen.

After you move in

Wipe the sink area dry at night, store food in sealed containers, clean the stove and monitor with sticky traps for the first few weeks. Inspect cabinets monthly.

When to call a professional

Involve a pest control provider at installation if you can. They can advise on sealing points and treat before the cabinets are closed. If roaches appear after installation, a professional can treat the voids using bait without removing cabinets.

Frequently asked questions

Can new modular kitchens get cockroaches?

Yes. The voids behind and under cabinets are attractive, and roaches can arrive through plumbing and gaps.

What is the most important gap to seal?

The openings around the sink pipes and the gap between the cabinets and the wall.

Do I need pest treatment before installation?

If you see signs of roaches or it is an older building, treating before the cabinets go in is worthwhile.

Will sealing make the kitchen harder to maintain?

Not if you leave access panels for plumbing. Sealing mainly closes pest routes.
