Ghost Ants (Tiny Pale Ants): Identification and Control

IPest Team Updated Ant Control

If you have noticed tiny ants that look almost translucent, with a dark head and a pale body that seems to disappear against light surfaces, you may have ghost ants. They are among the smallest household ants, quick, sweet-loving and fond of warm, humid places.

This guide explains how to identify and control them. Exact identification needs an expert.

The short answer

Ghost ants are tiny, about 1.5 to 2 mm, with a dark head and thorax and a pale, almost transparent abdomen and legs, giving them a ghostly look. They move erratically, trail to sweet foods and moisture, and nest in wall voids, potted plants, behind tiles, in leaf litter and in electrical cavities. They are hard to see on pale surfaces. Control relies on sugar-based bait, sanitation, fixing moisture, removing outdoor nests and sealing entry points, and avoiding repellent sprays that can scatter colonies. Professional help can resolve persistent infestations.

How to recognise them

  • Very small, with a dark head and thorax and pale, translucent abdomen and legs.
  • Fast, erratic movement, not always following straight lines.
  • Often found around sinks, bathrooms, kitchens and potted plants.
  • Attracted to sweets, honeydew and sometimes protein.

Where they nest

  1. Wall voids and cracks.
  2. Behind tiles and cabinets.
  3. Potted plants and planters.
  4. Outdoor soil, leaf litter and hollow plant stems.
  5. Electrical equipment and switchboards.

Why they are a nuisance

  • They contaminate food and surfaces.
  • They move into homes from outdoors in search of food and water.
  • They can have multiple, spreading nests.
  • They are easy to miss until numbers build.

Control steps

  1. Bait: Use a sugar-based gel or liquid bait along trails and near plants, out of reach of children and pets. Replenish for several weeks.
  2. Do not spray: Repellent sprays can disperse colonies and spread them.
  3. Clean up: Wipe sweet spills, store food in sealed containers and wash dishes.
  4. Fix moisture: Repair leaks and keep sinks and bathrooms dry.
  5. Treat plants: Check pots for nests and aphids, and repot if needed.
  6. Outdoor nests: Clear leaf litter and debris, and treat nests near the house.
  7. Seal entry points: After control, close gaps around windows, doors and pipes.

Plants

Indoor and balcony plants are common nesting places. Check the soil and the pot base, and keep pots off the floor on stands with barriers.

Prevention

  • Keep the house dry and clean.
  • Trim plants away from walls and windows.
  • Manage food and waste.
  • Check regularly after the monsoon.

When to call a professional

If ghost ants keep returning, a professional can find the nests and use targeted baiting.
