Fly Traps: Sticky Strips, UV Light Traps and Bait Traps Compared

There are many types of fly traps, and each suits a different situation.

The short answer

Sticky strips are cheap and simple but messy and visible. UV light traps attract flying insects and suit kitchens and shops when placed away from food. Bait traps lure flies with attractants and suit outdoor or farm settings. Traps reduce adults but do not replace sanitation. Place them correctly, replace them as advised and follow safety rules.

Sticky strips

• Low cost and easy.
• Fill up quickly and look untidy.
• Best as a monitor.

UV light traps

• Attract flying insects with UV light.
• Need correct placement and regular cleaning.
• Common in commercial kitchens.

Bait traps

• Use attractants to catch flies.
• Often smelly, suited to outdoors.
• Keep away from children and pets.

Tips

1. Fix the breeding source first.
2. Place traps away from food prep.
3. Replace on schedule.
4. Use traps to monitor trends.
