Does Boric Acid Really Work on Cockroaches?

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

Boric acid is one of the most widely recommended DIY remedies for cockroaches. It is cheap, easy to find and has a long history of use. But does it really work, and is it safe to use at home?

This guide explains how it works, what its limits are and the safety points to keep in mind.

The short answer

Boric acid can kill cockroaches, but slowly and unevenly. Cockroaches pick up the fine powder on their bodies, groom themselves and ingest it, which damages their digestive system, and it can work over a few days. It is most effective as a thin dust in dry, hidden places, and it works poorly in damp areas or when applied thickly, because roaches avoid heavy piles. It does not solve a large or established infestation on its own, and it must be kept away from children and pets because it is toxic if swallowed.

How it works

  • Cockroaches walk through a thin layer of the powder.
  • They clean their legs and antennae and swallow it.
  • It acts as a stomach poison and also affects the insect's outer coating.
  • Roaches that die in their harbourage may be eaten by others, spreading the effect.

Where it works best

  1. In a very thin, almost invisible layer. Roaches avoid thick piles.
  2. In dry areas, such as behind appliances, inside cabinet corners and along wall edges.
  3. In cracks and voids where children and pets cannot reach.

Limits

  • Slow: It does not give an immediate knockdown.
  • Moisture reduces it: It clumps and loses effect in damp spots such as sink cabinets and bathrooms.
  • Roaches may avoid it: Thick applications get detected and avoided.
  • Limited reach: It does not reach colonies inside walls or deep in drains.
  • Not a complete solution: It will not stop reinfestation from neighbours or drains.

Safety

Boric acid is toxic if swallowed and can irritate skin, eyes and the respiratory tract. It poses a risk to children and pets, who may touch or eat it. Keep it out of their reach, never put it on food surfaces, and wear gloves and a mask when applying. Do not use it in homes with toddlers or curious pets unless you can place it where it is completely inaccessible. If someone swallows it, contact a doctor immediately. Always follow the product label.

Better alternatives

Professional gel baits are designed to attract roaches, are placed in tiny amounts in hidden spots, and are generally easier to use safely than loose powder. Combining baits with sealing gaps and moisture control gives more reliable results.

When to call a professional

If you have tried boric acid and still see roaches after a couple of weeks, the colony is probably bigger or in places the powder does not reach. A technician can identify the source and use a method suited to your home.

Frequently asked questions

How long does boric acid take?

It can take several days to a couple of weeks to see an effect, and it may not eliminate a large colony.

Can I mix it with sugar?

Mixes are common, but they may attract children or pets and are harder to keep safe. We do not recommend them in homes with children or pets.

Is boric acid safe for pets?

No. It is toxic if ingested. Keep it out of reach entirely.

Should I use it in the kitchen?

Only in hidden, dry gaps that are sealed off from food and from children and pets.
