Do Ultrasonic Cockroach Repellers Work?
Plug-in ultrasonic repellers are marketed as an easy, chemical-free way to keep cockroaches, rats and other pests away. You plug them in and wait. The appeal is obvious, but do they work?
This guide looks at what is claimed and what is known.
The short answer
There is little reliable evidence that ultrasonic repellers control cockroaches. Studies of such devices have generally found that insects are either unaffected or become used to the sound, and cockroaches do not leave a home because of it. The sound also cannot pass through walls, furniture or cabinets, where roaches hide. They are not a substitute for sealing gaps, removing food and water, and using proper bait or professional treatment.
What manufacturers claim
- High-frequency sound irritates pests and makes them leave.
- It covers a whole room or home.
- It is safe, chemical-free and works continuously.
Why they fall short
- Sound is blocked easily: It does not travel well around furniture, into cabinets, or through walls.
- Habituation: Pests often get used to the sound.
- Roaches need little: If food, water and shelter exist, they stay.
- No effect on eggs or hidden colonies.
- Little independent evidence of effectiveness against cockroaches.
Pet considerations
Some pets, such as dogs, cats and small animals, may hear ultrasonic sound and be disturbed by it. Consider this before using one at home.
What works instead
- Remove food and water access at night.
- Seal gaps and cracks.
- Cover drains and fix leaks.
- Use gel bait in hiding places.
- Use sticky traps to monitor.
- Arrange professional treatment for established infestations.
Should you buy one?
If you already have one, it is unlikely to cause harm to people, but do not rely on it. Spending the same money on sealing gaps and professional treatment is more likely to solve the problem.
When to call a professional
If you see roaches despite using a repeller, the colony is established. A technician can find the source and treat it.
Frequently asked questions
Are ultrasonic repellers safe for humans?
They are generally considered safe for people, but may disturb some pets.
Can they work in a sealed room?
Not reliably. Roaches hide where the sound does not reach.
Do electromagnetic devices work better?
There is little evidence for these either.
Is there any chemical-free option that works?
Prevention measures such as sealing, sanitation and dryness work best, backed by baits where needed.
