Cockroaches in Wardrobes and Cupboards: Causes and Cleanup

IPest Team Updated Cockroach Control

Opening a wardrobe and finding a cockroach, or droppings on folded clothes, is distressing. Wardrobes and cupboards are dark, undisturbed and often a little damp, which makes them attractive hiding places, especially in Bangalore's humid months.

This guide explains why they come, how to clean up properly, and how to keep them out.

The short answer

Cockroaches enter wardrobes and cupboards for shelter and sometimes for food residue on clothes, paper or stored items. They are attracted by darkness, humidity, cardboard boxes, and gaps at the back or base of the unit that connect to walls and other rooms. To clear them, empty and clean the wardrobe, wash or air the clothes, apply gel bait in the corners and hinge gaps, fix any damp, and seal the gaps they use to enter.

Why wardrobes attract cockroaches

  • Darkness and stillness: Items stay untouched for weeks.
  • Humidity: Monsoon dampness settles in cupboards against outer walls.
  • Cardboard and paper: Boxes, old papers and shoe boxes give cover and sometimes food.
  • Food traces: Stained clothes, snacks kept in drawers or perfumed items.
  • Gaps: The back panel, hinges and the space between the wardrobe and the wall are open routes.

Signs to check

  1. Dark droppings on shelves and the base
  2. Egg cases in corners and hinge joints
  3. A musty or oily smell inside
  4. Small brown stains on fabric or paper
  5. Live roaches when you open the doors at night

Cleanup steps

  • Empty everything and place items on a clean surface away from the wardrobe.
  • Inspect each item, especially boxes, papers and folds. Dispose of infested cardboard.
  • Wash or air out clothes. Launder washable fabrics, and air delicate items in a clean, dry place.
  • Vacuum the wardrobe, corners, hinges, drawer tracks and the base.
  • Wipe with warm soapy water and dry completely.
  • Apply gel bait in the corners and hinge gaps, away from clothing contact.
  • Leave doors open for several hours to air the interior.

Protecting the wardrobe afterwards

Store clothes in closed boxes or bags rather than cardboard. Place moisture absorbers if the wardrobe is damp, and avoid storing food or snacks in the room. Seal gaps at the back and base. Pull the wardrobe a little away from the wall where possible, and check periodically.

What not to do

Do not spray insecticide directly onto clothes or leave strong chemicals such as naphthalene inside a closed wardrobe in daily use, as these can leave residue and fumes on fabric, and are a concern around children.

When to call a professional

If roaches return to the wardrobe after cleaning, the colony is likely in the wall or an adjoining room. A professional can treat the gaps and track the source with minimum contact with your clothes.

Frequently asked questions

Can cockroaches damage clothes?

They may chew on fabric stained with food or sweat and soil clothes with droppings, but they are not major fabric pests like moths.

Should I throw away infested clothes?

Usually not. Wash washable items on a hot cycle, and dry them fully in sunlight if possible.

Why do they prefer the bottom of the wardrobe?

The base is darker and damper, and closest to floor gaps and wall cavities.

Do moth balls repel cockroaches?

They are not a reliable control and can be unsafe around children and pets, so we do not recommend relying on them.
