Cockroach Droppings: How to Identify and Clean Them Safely
Even if you never see a cockroach, their droppings give them away. Knowing what to look for helps you confirm a problem early, and cleaning them properly matters because they can carry allergens and germs.
This guide explains how to identify cockroach droppings, tell them from other pests and clean them safely.
The short answer
Cockroach droppings look different depending on the size of the roach. Small cockroaches, such as German cockroaches, leave tiny dark specks resembling ground pepper or coffee grounds, sometimes as smears. Larger cockroaches leave bigger, cylindrical pellets with ridges, usually blunt at the ends, similar to small rodent droppings but typically smaller and with a ridged surface. They are found in kitchens, under sinks, behind appliances and in cabinet corners. Clean them using gloves, a damp cloth or a vacuum, and wash the area with soapy water.
What they look like
- Small roach droppings: Tiny black or brown specks, like pepper, often in clusters or streaks. In damp areas they appear as dark smears.
- Large roach droppings: Cylindrical, about a few millimetres long, with ridges along the sides.
- Fresh versus old: Fresh droppings are dark and slightly moist. Old ones are dry and pale.
Where to look
- Inside cabinets, along corners, hinges and shelf edges
- Under and behind the sink
- Behind the refrigerator and stove
- Along the top of cabinets and the chimney area
- Around drains, in bathrooms and utility rooms
- Near switchboards and appliances
Telling them from other droppings
- Mouse droppings: Larger, pointed at the ends, and found in scattered pellets.
- Rat droppings: Much larger, thick pellets.
- Lizard droppings: A dark part with a white tip.
- Dirt or crumbs: Will crumble and not smear when wet.
A useful test: place a drop of water on the specks. Cockroach droppings typically smear to a brownish colour.
Why they matter
Droppings can contain allergens that trigger asthma and allergy symptoms and may carry bacteria. They indicate active roaches nearby. The amount of droppings indicates how long and how heavily an area has been used.
How to clean them safely
- Wear gloves and, for large amounts, a mask.
- Vacuum first using a vacuum with a good filter, rather than sweeping, which spreads dust.
- Wipe with a damp cloth and soapy water.
- Disinfect surfaces that touch food, then rinse.
- Dispose of cloths and vacuum contents in a sealed bag.
- Wash hands thoroughly afterwards.
- Dry the area fully.
After cleaning
Droppings returning within days means the roaches are still active. Treat the source and seal gaps. Take photos before cleaning so a technician can see the pattern.
When to call a professional
Large quantities of droppings, a musty smell, droppings in several rooms or in cabinets with food are signs of a significant infestation. A professional can inspect, treat and advise on cleanup.
Frequently asked questions
Are cockroach droppings dangerous?
They can trigger allergies and asthma and may carry germs, so clean them with care.
Can I use a broom?
Vacuuming and damp wiping are better, as sweeping stirs up dust.
Do droppings mean the roaches are still here?
They show that roaches have been present. Check for fresh droppings to see if they are active.
Should I discard food near droppings?
Yes, discard open food that may be contaminated and clean containers before reuse.
