Bed Bugs vs Fleas vs Lice: Key Differences
Itchy bites, tiny bugs and a lot of worry: bed bugs, fleas and lice can be confused, but they live in different places, bite differently and need different treatments. Getting the identification right saves time and avoids treating the wrong problem.
This guide compares the three.
The short answer
Bed bugs are flat, oval, reddish-brown insects that live in mattresses, bed frames and furniture and come out at night to feed. Fleas are tiny, dark, jumping insects that live on pets and in carpets and bedding, and bite mostly around the ankles and legs. Lice are tiny insects that live on the human body or in hair and cling to hair or clothing, spread by close contact. Where you find the insect and where you get bitten are the best clues.
Bed bugs
- Size and look: About 4 to 5 mm, flat, oval, reddish-brown, wingless.
- Where they live: Mattress seams, bed frames, headboards, furniture and cracks.
- Bites: Itchy bumps, often in lines or clusters, on skin exposed during sleep.
- Clues: Dark spots on bedding, shed skins, blood spots.
- Movement: Crawl. They do not jump or fly.
Fleas
- Size and look: About 2 to 3 mm, dark brown, flat from side to side.
- Where they live: On pets, in pet bedding, carpets and soft furnishings.
- Bites: Small red itchy dots, usually around ankles and lower legs, sometimes with a red halo.
- Clues: Pets scratching, black flea dirt on pets and bedding.
- Movement: They jump.
Lice
- Size and look: About 2 to 4 mm, grey-brown, wingless, with claws that grip hair.
- Where they live: On the human scalp, body or in clothing seams, depending on the type.
- Bites: Itching of the scalp or body, from the lice and their saliva.
- Clues: Nits (eggs) attached to hair shafts, visible lice in hair.
- Spread: Close contact and sharing combs, hats and bedding.
Side-by-side
- Home base: Bed bugs live in furniture, fleas on pets and soft furnishings, lice on people.
- Bite pattern: Bed bugs on exposed sleeping skin, fleas on the legs, lice on the scalp or body.
- Jumping: Only fleas.
- Treatment: Different for each.
What to do
- Bed bugs: Inspect the bed and furniture, and arrange professional treatment.
- Fleas: Treat pets with vet-advised products and the home with cleaning and professional treatment.
- Lice: Use treatments recommended by a pharmacist or doctor, and wash bedding and combs.
When to call a professional
If you cannot tell which it is, collect a specimen in a clear container or take clear photos. A pest control provider can identify it, and a doctor can advise on bites and skin problems.
