Bed Bugs in Sofas and Couches: Where to Look
Bed bugs are most associated with beds, but they readily move into sofas and couches, especially when people sleep or rest there, or when a bedroom infestation spreads. Upholstered furniture offers many hiding places close to a sleeping or sitting host.
This guide shows where to look and what to do.
The short answer
Bed bugs hide in sofas along seams, piping, folds and tufts, under and behind cushions, in the gap between the seat and the back, in zippers and staples, in the frame joints and in the dust cover on the underside. Look for live bugs, dark droppings, blood spots, shed skins and eggs. If you find signs, vacuum and clean the sofa, treat it professionally with steam, heat or approved products, protect it with a cover if advised and check the surrounding area for further spread.
Why sofas attract bed bugs
- People sit and sleep there, providing blood meals.
- Seams and folds offer perfect hiding spaces.
- The furniture is rarely moved or inspected closely.
- Infestations spread from bedrooms or are brought in with guests and bags.
Where to inspect
- Seams, piping and buttons along the cushions and arms.
- The crease between the seat and the backrest.
- Under and behind cushions, and in their zippers.
- The underside, including the dust cover and staples.
- Frame joints, legs and wooden parts.
- Gaps between the sofa and the wall, and skirting nearby.
Signs
- Small, flat, reddish-brown bugs.
- Black or dark brown spots that smear.
- Rusty stains on fabric.
- Pale shed skins and whitish eggs.
- Itchy bites after resting on the sofa.
What to do
- Remove cushions and covers, and inspect with a flashlight.
- Vacuum all seams and crevices carefully, then dispose of the contents outdoors in a sealed bag.
- Wash removable covers on a hot cycle and dry on high heat, where the fabric allows.
- Steam seams and folds if the material permits, moving slowly.
- Do not use random insecticide sprays on upholstery.
- Book professional treatment.
- Check beds and nearby furniture too.
Preventing spread
- Do not move the sofa to other rooms.
- Keep the sofa a little away from walls.
- Limit sleeping on the sofa during treatment, or use a clean covering that you can wash.
- Use interceptors under legs, where possible.
When to call a professional
Upholstery is difficult to treat at home. A professional can treat the sofa safely and check the room for other hiding places.
