Bed Bug Treatment Preparation: A Room-by-Room Checklist
Preparation is a big part of whether bed bug treatment works. A well-prepared home lets the technician reach every hiding place and reduces the risk of spreading bugs. A poorly prepared one can lead to a failed treatment and extra visits.
This checklist covers the usual steps. Always follow your provider's own instructions first.
The short answer
To prepare for bed bug treatment, bag and heat-dry bedding and clothes, declutter the infested rooms without moving items between them, clear floors and the space around beds and furniture, pull furniture a little away from walls, empty drawers and wardrobes as advised, arrange for people and pets to be away as instructed, cover or move food and fish tanks and follow any specific instructions from your provider. Do not spray your own insecticides before the visit.
Whole home
- Confirm the date, time and any advance instructions with your provider.
- Arrange for access to all rooms, including balconies and storage.
- Plan where family members and pets will stay during treatment.
- Do not spray insecticides before the visit.
- Do not move items between rooms.
Bedroom
- Remove bedding and place it in sealed bags. Wash on hot and dry on high heat.
- Pull the bed away from walls and remove items under it.
- Remove and bag clothes from drawers and wardrobes as advised. Wash and heat-dry.
- Empty bedside tables.
- Clear the floor of clutter.
- Leave the mattress in place for the technician unless told otherwise.
Living room
- Remove cushions and throws from sofas and bag them for laundry.
- Pull furniture slightly away from the walls.
- Clear coffee tables and shelves close to seating.
- Move rugs for the technician to access the floor.
Kitchen and bathroom
- Cover or store food and utensils in sealed containers if the technician will work there.
- Bag toiletries that are kept in the bedroom.
Children's rooms
- Bag soft toys and bedding and heat-dry them.
- Remove clutter, books and toys from around the bed.
- Tell the provider about any infants or sensitive family members.
Pets and fish
- Arrange for pets to stay elsewhere, as advised.
- Cover fish tanks and turn off air pumps, if advised.
- Remove pet bedding and wash and dry it on high heat.
Safety and special items
- Remove or secure valuables and sensitive electronics.
- Tell the provider about health conditions, pregnancy and infants.
- Remove items that could be damaged by heat, if heat treatment is planned.
After preparation
Keep laundered items sealed until the home is treated. Do not return them to infested rooms.
When to call a professional
If you cannot do the preparation yourself, ask the provider whether they offer help, or ask family and friends. Good preparation is worth the effort.
