AC Drip Trays and Mosquito Breeding: What to Check

IPest Team Updated Mosquito Control

Air conditioners remove moisture from the air, and that water has to go somewhere. In many homes it collects in a drip tray, a bucket or a drain line, and if it stands for days, it can become a mosquito nursery. It is one of the most overlooked breeding sites in urban homes.

This guide explains what to check and how to prevent it.

The short answer

AC drip trays, buckets placed under drain pipes, window and split AC drain lines with blocked or sagging sections, and the trays under water coolers can hold stagnant water long enough for mosquitoes to breed, as larvae develop in about a week. Check trays and drain pipes weekly, empty and scrub any standing water, make sure drain lines slope correctly and are not blocked, direct drain water to a drain or garden instead of leaving it in open containers, and have the AC serviced regularly. Mosquito breeding can occur with very little water.

Where to look

  1. The drip tray or collection tray under the indoor unit, if present.
  2. Buckets or containers placed to collect drain water.
  3. The drain pipe of split ACs, where water may pool in low spots, kinks or blocked sections.
  4. Outdoor drain outlets and the area beneath, where puddles form.
  5. Window AC drip points and trays.
  6. Trays under air coolers and dehumidifiers.

Signs of a problem

  • Standing water in the tray, pipe or bucket for days.
  • Tiny wriggling larvae in the water.
  • Mosquitoes around the AC or in the room.
  • Water leaking or dripping because of a blocked drain.

How to prevent breeding

  • Empty and scrub trays and buckets at least weekly, and dry them.
  • Ensure drain lines are clean, correctly sloped and free of kinks and blockages.
  • Direct drain water into a proper drain or a place where it soaks away, rather than into an open container.
  • Do not leave puddles around outdoor drain outlets.
  • Cover trays or use designs that do not hold water.
  • Service the AC regularly and ask the technician to check the drain.
  • Keep the area around the outdoor unit clear.

Air coolers and dehumidifiers

Empty and clean water tanks and trays every few days, particularly when not in use. Do not leave water standing over weekends or when you are away.

If you find larvae

  1. Empty the water into a drain, not onto the floor where it can pool.
  2. Scrub the container and rinse.
  3. Clear the blockage or fix the slope.
  4. Check again after a few days.

When to call a professional

If you cannot fix the drain problem, call an AC technician. For persistent mosquitoes, a pest professional can find other breeding sites.
